• Information, entropy and coding
• Data and lossless coding systems and standards
• Scalar and vector quantization
• Introduction to rate-distortion theory
• Block transforms
• The JPEG image compression standard
• Rate allocation and coding gain
• Introduction to subband transforms and the discrete wavelet transform
• JPEG2000 image compression standard
• Human visual perception and implications for compression
• Subband transforms, audio coding and auditory perception
• Linear prediction and speech coding
• Video compression and standards, H.26x and MPEG-x
• Discussion of important issues in current and future media compression

課程目標 |
At the end of the course the student should:
1. Understand the key techniques for efficiently exploiting the redundancy present in an information source.
2. Appreciate the significance of appropriate distortion measures and models to the optimization of lossy compression schemes for audio, image and video sources.
3. Understand the principles of operation behind the major data, speech, audio, image and video compression standards.
